Co-Op 101

What exactly is Nittany Co-Op?

We Are... A non-profit helping other non-profits.  Nittany Co-Op is a purchasing cooperative for non-profit, Greek, faith-based, student and other community organizations in the Centre County region. We provide purchasing discounts, bill consolidation services and organizational consulting to our members for their operational needs. We basically act as a distributor of goods and services matching up Member needs with Vendor's capabilities. Our goal is to help local organizations operate as efficiently and effectively as possible in order to save time, money and resources so they in turn can do more for their own stated missions.

How does a Purchasing Co-Op work?

A Purchasing Co-Op is a type of cooperative structure that combines all its members' demands to get lower pricing from selected suppliers. By leveraging 100+ smaller organizations as well as all of their individuals affiliated with them together as a single entity, Nittany Co-Op is able to drastically reduce expenses while maintaining quality service.

What is a Member Organization?

An organization acting in a not-for-profit or tax-exempt capacity who has agreed to participate in the Co-Op programs where beneficial.  The one-time membership fee of $100 for Member Organizations is currently being waived for our New Membership Campaign! Member Organizations agree to simple general terms as we extend a line of credit to our vendors on their behalf.

What is an Approved Vendor?

An Approved Vendor is a business that provides goods and/or services to our Members. Since our Members' interests come first, we strive to partner with only the BEST businesses that pride themselves on exceptional service. When becoming a Vendor, a business agrees to offer a discounted rate on their goods and/or services in exchange for the leveraged volume of 100+ Member Organizations and our Individual Members. In providing quick and secured cash flow under our bill consolidation program, a pay discount is applied that is no more than standard credit card processing fees. There is a minimal annual marketing fee that provides full exposure on Nittany Co-Op marketing resources including website directory, social media, email marketing and personal interactions with decision makers.

What is an Individual Member?

An individual affiliated with a Member Organization or an employee of an Approved Vendor. Individual Members have a one-time membership fee of $25 that grants them access to various personal discounts through a membership discount card. A portion of the membership fee also gets applied to any affiliated Member Organizations as a credit to their Co-Op account.

Why become a Member Organization?

Membership sits at the core of Nittany Co-Op - it's what sets us apart from other entities and it is of that which you can be proud. As a member-owned non-profit cooperative, our bottom line is dedicated to you, Our Members. Acting as a central hub between community organizations, student organizations, individuals and local businesses, we can be a valuable resource in promotion information, expanding knowledge or sharing best practices. Whether it's by offering operational consultation, promoting events, supporting fundraisers, coordinating volunteer assistance or simply informing others about your organization, Nittany Co-Op can help enhance the reach of your goals.

Why become an Approved Vendor?

In partnering with Nittany Co-Op, we will help secure strong relationships and maintain stability in an ever-changing environment. Discounts on goods/services for our leveraged group are quickly offset by the amount of volume we can help generate. Pay term discounts provided are counterbalanced by the quick, secured and consolidated cash flow we provide on our Member Organizations' behalf. Annual marketing fees are fractional compared to how much exposure we can provide through internet, email marketing, print or in person. Those businesses who have committed to our cooperative network quickly realize the benefits we provide. Although we cannot guarantee complete exclusivity, we vet and review our Vendors to ensure they are providing exceptional service to our Members. Since not all businesses will meet our standards, only Approved Vendors will take advantage of our cooperative network.

How do the Purchasing Discounts work?

The buying leverage of the 100+ organizations in the Co-Op allows you to purchase virtually anything you need, from toiletries to entertainment, at a bargain price not available to the average person or organization. Retail vendors generally have the ability to provide a set percentage off while wholesale and service vendors have established a pre-determined rate.

How does Bill Consolidation work?

Why waste precious time going through a multitude of bills each month? In extending a line of credit to our Member Organizations, we consolidate your expenses so you pay only ONE BILL each month saving you valuable time and effort.

How do I get a Co-Op Purchasing Card?

If you are the financial officer of a Member Organization, please contact us at 814-237-8800 or stop by our office at 226 E. Nittany Ave. or email us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . After compoeting a simple form authorizing individuals of your choice to have cards, we will issue what is necessary to meet your needs.

What is the Annual Patronage Dividend?

At the end of our fiscal year in June, any additional revenue generated by Nittany Co-Op will be returned to our Member Organizations in the form of a patronage dividend. Our main priority is to bring upfront discounts wherever possible but any additional rebates generated are calculated based on the percentage of volume purchased through the Co-Op.

What other intangible benefits does Nittany Co-Op membership provide?

Since we deal with many entities run by volunteers who have limited time to give, we want to be that stable resource that allows individuals to be successful in their duties. We understand people have professional, personal, academic and many other obligations which makes it hard to volunteer. With us as a central hub, we can point people in the right direction for ANYTHING they may need. This ultimately allows officers to focus more on the actual 'doing' instead of figuring out 'how' to accomplish a given task.

How does Nittany Co-Op generate revenue?

By managing bill consolidation services and leveraging member purchase volume, Nittany Co-Op earns discounts and rebates from Vendors. Our membership and marketing fees also provide additional revenue. However, as a non-profit ourselves, our bottom line is dedicated to our Members. Any excess revenue remaining at the end of the fiscal year is returned to our Member Organizations in the form of a patronage dividend. Since inception, Nittany Co-Op has collectively returned over $2.3 million to our members!

Who governs Nittany Co-Op?

Our members do. Representatives from our Member Organizations are elected to the governing board of directors at our Annual Meeting and meet regularly to set policy objectives and future directives.

What type of accreditation does Nittany Co-Op have?

Nittany Co-Op is registered with the Commonwealth of PA as a non-profit cooperative corporations. We are also a standing member with the CBICC, the National Cooperative Business Association, the North American Students of Cooperation and the National Association of Collegiate Cooperatives.
